A little bit about me.....I have been designing and decorating rooms for a few years. It all started with projects in my house and then I decided to do this professionally. I went back to school and put in a real effort to learn the art and the science of Interior design. Since I opened my company, Lakbir Design (www.lakbirdesign.com), I have completed projects both large and small. It has been quite the journey to develop a new client base, vendors and a small business, all at the same time.

When my 12-year-old daughter asked me to redecorate her room, I thought it was no big deal, I can do this! Right around that same time I was introduced to the One Room Challenge and I decided to put the two together which gave me added motivation!

Now clients can be demanding but let me tell you, a 12-year-old client is a whole new breed. Designing the room around a long list of constraints was truly a challenge. A 12-year-old girls clarity of thought (and sometimes total inflexibility) was a wake up call. I received a along list of requirements that range from a fixed family of colors, floor plan etc. I was on my toes from day one. It is hard enough being a mother, but the expectations of designer mom were massive.

I had plenty of ideas of what I wanted to do with the room, but I needed to lock in my design plan in the first week to make sure I had enough time to source all the items. I made some bold decisions; Stencil paint vs. wallpaper, a unique design for her desk, and trying to keep the room in 3 primary colors white, rose gold and turquoise. Once we agreed on the design, her high expectations went even higher.

Here is what the room looked like at the beginning along with our concepts and elements - 

As you can tell from my previous blogs, there were a few nervous moments along the way but I am proud to tell you that the end product is even beyond my expectations. I have to give a lot of credit to my vendors for working with me. This would not be possible without their support for delivering everything on time and per my requirements. Rye Brook Painting did an amazing job on the stencil work for me as the pattern changed several times to accommodate the space. Woodworkings by Erminio produced a custom bookshelf for me on very short notice. Natasha Miller (www.tashography.com) was my photographer for the final product. I think she did a perfect job of capturing the essence of the project in the images.

At Lakbir Design, we take pride in all of our work but this one was definitely a special project for me. The smile on my daughters face when she looked at the finished room was the best return on this investment! She absolutely loved it and she can't wait to show it to her friends!

One Room Challenge - Girls Room Design Week 5

Hi everyone! I was out for spring break to get some real fun in the sun with my family. The kids had a blast but I tried to achieve as much as I could by taking charge of the furniture and lighting purchases so we could be on time. Thank you Linda at Calling it Home who conceived the One Room Challenge, nurtured it like a baby, turning it into the big sensation it is today!

I have been following a lot of projects highlighted by the participants and the concepts and progress are just absolutely phenomenal!

I missed an entire week because of spring break and I was in a bit of a panic. I even dreamt of my stencil simply because it has been one of the most challenging design items in terms of placement.

Finally we are coming to the end and now I can divert my energy towards the bedding and accessories to complete the room. Most of the furniture is in and the Mirrors will be hung tomorrow. I am quiet a neat freak but these past weeks have totally converted me into being more adaptable to my messy surroundings :))

My daughter is looking forward to finally having her room back next week !

We finally went hunting for the perfect bedding set because this is one thing I always like to touch and feel. These shams brought a smile to my face since spring in New York is absolutely mesmerizing and having all the spring colors in the color scheme is createing magic.

I love the throw on the beautiful and cozy grey reading chair and how the patterns battle for their place in the room. The sheers have a sparkle sequence detail in it with a hot pink velvet drape peeping through that makes them pretty cool and fun.

The bath balls below from Lush is a fascination for my daughter, so why not feed her passion. 

I am still waiting on one last piece of furniture and then I will schedule the photo shoot for Monday. Wish me luck that i'll able to achieve all I have left to do in the next couple of days.

One Room Challenge - Girl's Room Design Week 4

Its week four of the challenge, already! I have made some tremendous progress and my daughter is excited at the way the room is progressing. A project this personal has an element of gratification somehow different from working with a client. Seeing the smiling face of my daughter has made the entire project worth any challenge!

The stenciling done in Ralph Lauren's Rose Gold has worked wonders for the overall design by adding a lot of glamor and fun to walls. The color and the enhanced design of the print dresses up the room beautifully! I love the way a paint can bring a room to life, after all in this day in age its all about the bling and beautiful surroundings. We plan on adding some pretty and personal character to the room before we are finished!We are planning on placing two vertical mirrors from Bungalow 5 on the wall featured below along with an Elyse Graham Drip Mirror in Mimosa which I had purchased at a recent trade show (I had the pleasure to meet this amazing artist). The Liquido dresser in high gloss white lacquer adds a nice contrast to the all organic texture of the warm wood floor and the architectural desk that is almost floating in its design scheme. I have been drooling over this shuttle desk from Dot and Bo for a while now since the desk itself is art. Its solid oak wood frame inspires architectural movement while a thick plate of 8' long glass provides a protective work space for study and art projects.

The concept is to keep the room as organic as possible .The picture above is used to show the idea I had for a pedestal bed in her room. I like the simplicity of the style as it gives a clean look. I am working on utilizing the space in a manner that will reflect her personality. She likes a lot space to entertain her friends and at the same time wants to have it personalized to her. She has a love for white which is a big help in adding more visual space and element to the room!

Other pieces I have selected to coordinate are a contemporary desk and upholstered chair that may go beside the desk or in a corner of the room. I am still working on the space plan and choosing the right upholstery fabric for the chair.

I will be adding a shelf unit similar to the one displayed above and the wood tones match the wood selected in the other pieces for this project perfectly. As I finish the paint I will be making sure these are the pieces we will be using to finish up the floor plan. We are moving along quickly because next week we will have our final REVEAL!

One Room Challenge - Girl's Room Design Week 3

So now it is week three and I have run into some challenges with the concept I have decided to go with. I am however surprised with the main color, Benjamin Moore / Venus Pink , that I have decided to go with. I am also excited about the metallic color I have chosen for the stencil and I'm sure that will be fabulous as well! The stencil design however has become a huge head scratcher....

Originally we looked at many wall covering options. As I mentioned in prior weeks, the idea my daughter came up with was a bit harder to find in a wall covering with the colors she wanted.  Of course her deciding on the metallic pink tones that resembled her iPhone was a challenge in itself to match. Teenagers are very particular with things, especially with trends like this, and since my daughter is a mature artistic sole herself, it had to be right. 

The process of mixing the colors to get the right matches was a challenge and pleasing her creative eye was another! You can imagine how happy I was when she loved the base color. One hurdle overcome, now it was time to start the stenciling...

The stencil I designed  was a series of links that would make up a 12" x 12" pattern and it would repeat. There was a small border that became apparent after we started applying the stencil and actually it was a nice surprise since I liked the effect. The bigger challenge was keeping the pattern straight around corners, door frames and switch plates.  I decided to make a change at that point and keep it off the corners. It became much more time consuming than I imagined, which resulted in a cost factor with the time the contractor was spending. This threw me a bit over budget on money and on time than I anticipated originally. I decided to keep the pattern off the corners in the room and the door moldings as well.  

I also decided it would be tasteful to eliminate the ceiling.The pattern started to look wonderful around all walls so I changed the concept accordingly.

I was also enjoying how the chandelier looked with the pattern itself.  The pink tones against the crystal was more elegant than I anticipated. The dark wood floor will be a nice contrast to it as well.

So far.... so good. We have overcome some huge challenges and I am anxious to see how this progresses. I am also excited to share it with you in following weeks.  Stay tuned!

One Room Challenge - Girl's Room Design Week 1 & 2

Joining the One Room Challenge    |     Girls Room

Calling it Home has been hosting the ever inspiring One Room Challenge for many seasons now.
I happened to find out from my amazing Design group Design Er-Therapy that the season was on its way. I was excited but the thought of being able to finish a project in 6weeks was out of reach in my mind, especially for a personal project. It is always easy to accomplish a task/project for a client but never enough time for our personal project.

I am a week late in entering the challenge and this is definitely going to make every decision to be taken in the right direction!!!! I am certainly inspired by looking into the past spaces and amazing transformations that have taken in these 6weeks !!

Before the project - April 7th

This weeks challenge room belongs to my daughter. She's very creative and has a design mind of her own already at 12 so my battle begins before I have even stepped foot into decorating this 18' x 13' personal space that she has reminded me is hers! Her love for the turquoise color has been strong for a while which you'll see in the concept below. It is her color of choice and it will take some persuading on my end to change her mind.

The floor plan below includes a low platform bed, a dresser between the windows and a study table large enough to accommodate for tons of homework. The flow through this room is very important for all the fun she plans to have with her friends in this, her personal private space!

The Concept

The rendering is a concept that my daughter has envisioned right down to the color, bed, dresser and desk. The wall design she has envisioned is inspired from a tile. We looked through a lot of wall paper designs but getting her color into the pattern was something she was very adamant about. With some convincing I can now say her favorite color is Rose gold, thank you Apple iPhone :))

We are currently getting a custom Stencil made at stencilers.com. I do not want the wall to look too cluttered with a pattern so choosing the right one is very important.

Shhhhh......Paint and Stenciling in Process

The wall, ceiling and molding colors are all custom. The color to the left, Venus pink, is from Benjamin Moore and was altered to get just the right shade. This custom color has different effects based on the time of the day. It has already enhanced the room in just the first step. The stencil color is a metallic paint from Ralph Lauren and looks amazing!

As you can already see in the below photos, our painter has a very important task ahead. The detail of using stencils is both precise and rewarding.
